The Punta Tombo Reserve is a Natural Area that protects Magellanic penguin colonies. The area is the place chosen by the penguins to nest and raise their chicks. The penguin rookery is a coastal strip 3 km long and 600 meters wide. Please note: Punta Tombo is closed from April to September. The penguins can be observed between September and April, when they come ashore to breed. During these months, the Punta Tombo colony can house up to 400,000 penguins. During the winter months (April to September), the penguins remain at sea, which is why the Punta Tombo Reserve is closed. The penguins return to the same place each year to nest. The penguin rookery has a visitor center where wildlife rangers give talks and explanations. From here begins a 3,500-meter trail along the beach that runs through the penguin habitat. Particularly notable are the nests dug into the ground and the penguins that, with a firm and graceful gait, go to and from the sea in search of food. In addition to the penguins, rheas, guanacos, and maras can be seen.
